January Update & New Year’s Goals

It’s a new year, and with it comes new goals and opportunities.

Welcome to Conductor Pat’s Perspective. And happy new year to you all. I hope the holiday season was pleasant.

I was fortunate to travel home from my internship/volunteering program and reconnect with friends and family. I also had some time to work on a passion project.

Today I wish to discuss my goals for 2022; the blog, writing and my author platform. There’s a lot to discuss, so let’s begin.

Blog

Last year was rough for my blog. In late July/early August my computer, which got me through college, began to have mechanical issues. That left me without a way to write and update my blog.

My computer failure wasn’t the only factor. I had my public relations internship to keep me busy. I was facing burn out with my writing and author platform, so I took a break to recharge and focus on internship hunting.

Now that I’ve settled into a new schedule (and purchased an iPad keyboard with some Christmas money), I’m ready to get back to blogging.

The aforementioned iPad keyboard, being used to write this post.

So what’s my plan for the blog? My goal’s to publish a new post once a month, probably on Saturday. I’ll set a definitive schedule in the near future. I also would like to publish three guest posts, so be on the lookout for those.

Writing

As I hinted earlier, I’ve started outlining an urban fantasy slice of life story using the snowflake method. My goal is to have Draft 1 written by year’s end and complete enough research to start Draft 2.

A year’s a long time to try and work on a project and stay the course. To help myself, I’m going to do bimonthly/trimonthly check-ins to check my progress. I’d like to reach Chapter 5 of 10 by July, though life has a way of changing plans as we’ve seen over the past two years.

Another goal I’d like to work on is to have three articles published. Since leaving my college and student paper, I’ve missed working on non-fiction writing. So I’ll be looking for writing opportunities and maybe try my hand at freelancing again.

Similar to the articles, my goal is to have one short story published this year. I have three that are in process and need editing, then I plan to submit and see what interest I can find. If I don’t get any published, I would like to have them edited by a professional editor.

Author Platform

For my author platform I have two goals. First, post more regularly on social media. I’ve missed interacting with authors on Twitter, and I’d like to get back into the rhythm of posting. I read on a post (I’ll link if I can find it again) that it’s best to focus on one social media platform, then branch out. So for now I’ll focus on either Twitter or Instagram.

Another part of my platform I’d like to work on is my website. Similar to my writings, I wasn’t able to do any work on my website. I’m watching website tutorials to update my site. I’d also like to buy a domain name once I find a job after my current internship ends.

Summary of 2022 Goals

  • Post once a month on blog

  • Finish Draft 1 of long form project

  • Publish 3 articles, 1 short story

  • Interact more on social media

  • Update website

Those are my goals for 2022. I hope I’m not being too ambitious, though we’ll have to wait and see. What are your plans for 2022? Let me know in the comments. Happy new year everyone, I hope it treats you well.
